Dr. Mary Leung discussed "Thriving in Graduate School
and Paying for it" in April 2011. Session url at http://bit.ly/ELA_ML. PDF of ppt used during webinar. Dr. Leung manages the Department of Energy Computational
Science Graduate Fellowship program, of which she is an alumna. Before
joining
Krell in 2008, she was the project director for the Tools for Success
program
at Miami
Dade College.
Funded by the National Science Foundation, Tools for Success is aimed
at
increasing the participation of under-represented students in science,
technology, engineering and mathematics.
Dr. Leung received her Ph.D. in
computational physical
chemistry at the University
of Washington.
Her thesis
work involved simulating the production of quantum macroscopic
superposition
states of the Bose-Einstein condensate. She conducted her computational
studies
at the National
Energy Research Scientific
Computing Center at Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory. Dr. Leung also spent 16 years working in the
computer
industry, where she held a variety of technical and management
positions with
an emphasis on education, instructional design and distance learning.
Dr. Leung is a member of
a
number of professional societies, including the American Chemical
Society,
American Physical Society, Society of Industrial and Applied
Mathematics, and
the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She
currently
serves on the AAAS Committee on Opportunities in Science.
