Roscoe Giles is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University (BU) and Deputy Director of the Boston University Center for Computational Science. Giles' research focuses on the application of high performance and parallel computing to physics and materials problems.   

Professor Giles has worked to prototype and build computational and educational infrastructure that will enable broad participation of scholars and students in high-performance computing.  He is a member of the leadership team of the Empowering Leadership Alliance and lead for Broadening Participation for the SC2011 Conference.  For his work in increasing the participation of minorities in computer and computational science, in 2000 Giles received the A. Nico Habermann award from the Computing Research Association. 

Giles has served in a number of other leadership roles in the community, including as a member of the DOE Advanced Scientific Computing Advisory Committee (ASCAC), the board of Associated Universities Inc (AUI), chair of the Boston University Faculty Council, and General Chair of the SC Conference in 2002. 

Professor Giles received his PhD in Physics from Stanford University  in 1975 - the first in a long line of African-American PhD's in Physics and Applied Physics at Stanford. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from the University of Chicago in 1970.
